Scope and safety boundary
Customs, air security, hazardous materials, and regulated commodities require authorized entities and qualified professionals.
Learning objectives
After this lesson, you should be able to
- Build a total-landed movement comparison
- Map customs, security, and licensed-party handoffs
- State schedule confidence and recovery options honestly
Compare the whole service
Model origin pickup, consolidation, terminal or airport handling, linehaul, fuel and surcharges, customs, duties and taxes orientation, screening, storage, demurrage or detention, drayage, delivery, insurance questions, packaging, dimensions, minimums, and expected exceptions.
- Confirmed and estimated capacity
- Cutoffs and operating calendars
- Dimensional and chargeable weight
- Free time and storage
- Special handling and temperature
Map regulated and licensed handoffs
Identify importer and exporter roles, customs broker, carrier, forwarder or intermediary, TSA-regulated participants, hazardous-material responsibilities, other government agencies, and the documents each expects. Do not perform licensed or regulated work through a course exercise.
Communicate a confidence range
Separate booked from requested, scheduled from estimated, released from held, screened from pending, customs-cleared from submitted, and physical arrival from final availability. Give the customer milestones, uncertainty, dependencies, and the next confirmation point.
Apply the decision protocol
Use a fictionalized or fully permissioned operating scenario. Build five columns: observed facts, supplied facts, assumptions, controlling sources, and unresolved questions. Do not advance a consequential action while a required fact, authorization, qualification, or safety condition remains unresolved.
- Demonstrate: Build a total-landed movement comparison
- Demonstrate: Map customs, security, and licensed-party handoffs
- Demonstrate: State schedule confidence and recovery options honestly
- Name the decision owner, evidence standard, stop condition, and next review time
Practice with evidence
Create a one-page decision record and ask a peer to challenge the source, version, applicability, missing facts, incentives, and proposed communication. Revise the record rather than defending the first answer. Preserve the initial and corrected versions so an editor can see what the exercise actually taught.
- Cite every externally verifiable claim
- Separate uncertainty from error
- Escalate beyond the lesson's stated competence boundary
- Remove private, proprietary, or personally identifiable information
Correct and transfer the learning
After the scenario, compare the decision to the current source and the stated objective. Record the misconception, the evidence that corrected it, the operational control that would prevent recurrence, and the conditions that would require the answer to be researched again.
Knowledge check
Why is linehaul transit time alone an unreliable mode comparison?
Reveal the answer
It omits origin and destination handling, cutoffs, capacity, customs, security, availability, storage, documents, special handling, and recovery time.
The customer experiences the complete door-to-door movement.
